The United States military is undergoing a major transition as begins focusing on the Russia and China as its primary adversaries. With that, the United States is producing some new assets which will help in meeting this challenge. In this episode of One Minute Facts, well briefly look at new weapons that are currently being developed for the land, sea and air.
The B-21 Raider is set to become the United States’ new stealth bomber. With an estimated cost of $500 million per aircraft, the US hopes that the B-21 can build on the success of the US’s current stealth bomber, the B-2. Little is known about the aircraft as it is highly classified, but some reports say the prototype is being build right now with the hopes of completing its first flight next year. If the B-21 can replace the aging B-52 and B-1, the US will have a significant advantage over China and Russia’s air defense systems.
Submarines represent an important part of the US’s nuclear deterrent. With ballistic missiles submarines in the water, it gives adversaries a moment of pause once they realize these nuclear weapon carrying submarines are out there ready to strike back. That’s why the US is looking to a new submarine, the Colombia-Class, to replace the US’s aging Ohio class submarines. COnstructuction of the lead boat should begin in 2021 at a cost of 6.4 billion dollars. These nuclear powered submarines will likely have 16 missile tubes, be more stealthy and include new propulsion technology.
Finally, the M-1A2C is the US Army’s newest tank. First delivered towards the end of 17, congress has approved the purchase of an additional 135 of these advanced tanks this year and another 174 in 2020.This new tank features additional armor and the trophy system which uses radar to identify incoming rockets or missiles coming at the tank. Trophy will then fire a small projectile at the threat, destroying it before it can cause serious damage to the tank. The increased survivability of the M-1A2C and other new features continue to make the Abrams, one of the most formidable tanks in the world.
