To protect food hypersensitive consumers, more types of food will be required to have potentially lifesaving allergen information provided on the label. Known as ‘Natasha’s Law’, the new legislation will come into force in October 2021, giving businesses a transition period to prepare for the new rules. Prior to October 2021, the law on allergen labelling has applied to pre-packed food only, i.e. food packed for supply to retailers or mass caterers. The law was not applicable to food pre-packed for direct sale on the premises (PPDS) and businesses preparing packaged food items for sale on site did not have to label their products and provide details of ingredients. Therefore, even if some of the ingredients included allergens required to be listed and emphasised on the labels of packaged food, there has been no such requirement for PPDS items. The new guidance requires all PPDS products to have on the packaging (or a label attached to its packaging) the following criteria: The name of the food; A full ingredients list; Any allergenic ingredients emphasised (for example in bold or italics). Managing the allergen risks: The accurate and reliable detection of allergens ensures the safety and quality of your products and processes, verifies food properties for labelling to avoid product recalls and ultimately safeguards your brand image. Intertek’s laboratories test for the majority of allergenic ingredients as listed in Annex II of Regulation (EU) No1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers. #FoodAllergen #NatashasLaw #allergens #PPDS #FoodInformationRegulations
