Humans, irrespective of their gender, need a healthy diet for nutrition and good health. The right amount of nutrients supports healthy weight management and regulates the body’s functions. But how much nutrients they need is entirely dependent on their gender. They both need the same nutrients, but the proportion may vary in some cases.
The difference in calorie requirements –
Calorie requirements in men and women depend on the factors such as age, height, activity level, and muscle mass. Because women carry lean muscle mass as compared to men, they require low calories. However, pregnant ladies may need additional calories for the growth of a healthy fetal.
Vitamin requirements for men and women –
Both men and women need vitamins for the proper functioning of the body. However, the amount of the vitamin may largely vary depending on the size of the body. As per the Institute of Medicine, men need 90 milligrams of vitamin C while women require 75 milligrams of vitamin C. Both genders require 15 micrograms of vitamin D per day. Pregnant women and women trying to conceive need higher levels of folate (vitamin B₉).
Mineral and iron needs –
Both the genders need a similar amount of minerals and iron. However, menstruating women need more irons intake per day than men. Both genders need 1000 milligrams of calcium per day. Women should take calcium intake seriously for a thicker and stronger bone structure. They are more prone to osteoporosis than men.
